2 Minute RPG

As the name suggests, this lolfest packs as much stunning gameplay as possible into the 2 minutes allotted per game. You move around the barely drawn landscape, talk to NPCs, battle monsters, grind in the dungeons, collect phat lewts, and then register a score after your 2 minutes expires. It is a clever idea and it’s actually kinda fun, to tell you the truth, but it’s too bare bones to really taken seriously. What the developers have proven is that it possible to make a Pick-Up-and-Play RPG and I applaud them for it.

Aera

This game has really nice graphics, both in the foregrounds and especially in the backgrounds, but the gameplay is somewhat unexpected: it’s not a freeform flight game, you travel along a linear path. This goals is to fly through Pilotwings-style hoops and collect goodies, while avoiding enemies and mines. Pretty fun, actually, but the flip controls take a little getting used to. Due to your wonky angle at some points, it’s not easy to see what lies ahead, which can be frustrating, but it works for the most part.

Pocket Kite

Stunt Kite

Wow, this is actually pretty fun; move both handles down for speed and use them kinda like Battlezone joysticks to turn. There are three backdrops (one of which is kind of grainy), three difficulty levels (which provide smaller, more maneuverable kites, as you move up), and three game types (collect balloons, hit sequential targets, and chase another kite, which is the most difficult of the three). It’s not my all time favorite or anything, but the best compliment I can pay the game is that it made me want to try flying a real kite.

Update: I tried flying a real kite at the company picnic and…I SUCK!!!

Bluebird

Bluebird

How can a game starring this adorable little bluebird, by the guy that did the amazing Scoops, be so..I don’t know, lame? Maybe my expectations were too high, but the controls are annoying, the collision detection is off, it’s repetitive, and the game mechanics don’t make much sense. Why the hell would a bird lose health for flapping its wings?!? In its defense, the art and soundtrack are good and people online seem to be fans of it, just not me.

AC-130 Spectre: iSniper from above!

AC-130 iSniper from the sky

Anyone that has played the AC-130 Spectre mission, in Call of Duty 4, knows exactly what this game is; three different zoom levels, three devastating weapons, three percent chance of return fire…just like real life! Controls are a little more frustrating than the “real game”, but still playable. Be forewarned that the game is pretty repetitive.

Dark Raider

Dark Raider

Worst game icon I’ve seen…EVAR. It’s meant to be a hybrid between Zelda gameplay and Indiana Jones theme, I guess. You travel between 8 themed worlds (Egypt, Greece, Rome, etc.), each with 8 levels, collecting keys to gain entry to more secret tombs. There are a variety of monsters, traps, and puzzles. The game’s not bad, but it’s not really good either. The primary issue is the controls. I rarely felt like it was my fault when I died, which is a huge problem. It seems like it has depth, but you have to be willing to soldier through the control issues to experience it. Sometimes, a game just rubs you the wrong way and this is how I felt about Dark Raider; it just doesn’t do anything really well. /do not want

Castle Conflict

Castle Conflict

This looks like an “in-ur-garage production”, but the old skool pixel are is alright. The goal is to reduce the opponent’s castle to zero health. Lumber is the resource and you send your little loggers out to get it, but have to out-think the opponent before they slaughter your workforce. Each different unit shown at the top has a different use, but they are not terribly diverse. The game is mostly about timing and a little strategy.

Flu Fighter

Flu Fighter

This is a good Dr. Mario clone with a bad theme; you line up falling quaaludes, as far as I can tell.

Update: Unfortunately, in later levels, I ran into some control issues and several bugs, one of which was a show-stopper, in which my save was lost. I typically don’t review, based on bugs, but many users are reporting the same issue I had. I would stay away from this at least until the 1.3 update is released. Personally, I don’t plan to play it again. Rating plummets.
